The track contains some of the oldest rocks in New Zealand as well as a large number of the unique species of animals and plants that have helped make the park a viable contender for a World Heritage title - which it is currently under application for. It is also a stronghold of the Great Spotted Kiwi (Roa) and these can be heard calling from a number of huts at night while on the track. Blue duck (whio) also breed in the area.
The drive from Nelson to the start of the track takes you through some of Nelson's finest wine and fruit growing areas before skirting the edge of the Abel Tasman National Park. The drive both to and from the track traverses some of the most picturesque countryside New Zealand has on offer, including the spectacular Buller River which most walkers will drive alongside on their return.
Flights to and from Nelson connect to all main centres within the country for both domestic and international visitors coming to walk the track. For suggestions on how best to get to Nelson, please feel free to contact us for advice.
