The definitive guide for hiking & tramping on one of New Zealand’s most diverse coastal walking tracks. Info on independent & guided walking & hiking tours, accommodation, track transport and more.

If you prefer independent adventure but with certain elements arranged, we can assist with our innovative 'Heaphy Track Freedom Package'.

We arrange your accommodation prior to the walk in Nelson, transport to and from the track, Department of Conservation hut tickets and luggage transfers to the other end for your surplus baggage as well as provide you with a detailed route guide. You will need to carry your own clothing and carry and prepare your own food but our freedom package certainly takes the hassle out of all logistics.

Walk the 82km track from the north (Collingwood) end and finish 4 days later at the Kohaihai River on the West Coast. The shuttle collects you in Nelson and transfers you to Browns Hut to begin the walk.

The former pack track – now upgraded - is known for its stunning beauty and diversity of landscape, from the expansive rolling tussock lands of the Gouland Downs, the temperate rainforest, to the almost tropical northwest Nelson coastline with Nikau groves right down to the sandy beaches.

You stay each night in Department of Conservation huts and complete the track at Kohaihai before collection by shuttle to return to Nelson or delivery to Westport to connect with shuttle buses to continue your West Coast journey.

Important Footnote: The accommodation is in Department of Conservation huts which are pre-booked for you - these are basic but comfortable and must be shared with other track walkers.
