HELPFUL HINTS FOR YOUR WALK PART ONE:

WHY GO GUIDED?

While anyone can walk the Heaphy Track, guided walk options enable you to experience this fantastic Great Walk with relative ease - without the heavy burden of carrying your own food and organising the trip. Here at Southern Wilderness NZ, we can take the hassle out of your Heaphy Track adventure!

Southern Wilderness NZ’s guided walks on the Heaphy Track are a total package, beginning and ending in the sunshine city of Nelson. These tours depart year round subject to minimum numbers - please contact us with your preferred departure date.

Walk the 82km track from the north (Collingwood) end and finish 4 or 5 days later at the Kohaihai River on the West Coast. The former pack track is known for its stunning beauty and diversity of landscape, from the expansive rolling tussock lands of the Gouland Downs, the temperate rainforest, to the almost tropical northwest Nelson coastline with Nikau groves right down to the sandy beaches.

We stay each night in Department of Conservation huts with the exception of the last night spent at the Alpine Lodge in St Arnaud for a taste of well-deserved luxury and a restaurant meal before transferring back to Nelson. NB. Allow five days for the four day package or six days for the five day package – the days required to walk the track plus the overnight at the Alpine Lodge and transfer back to Nelson by lunchtime on the final day.

Catering is fully provided for the tour - except for breakfast on the morning of the first day when guests are collected from their Nelson accommodation. See The Heaphy Menu for more details of what we offer on this truly gourmet backcountry package.

All guides employed by Southern Wilderness NZ hold current first aid certificates and are equipped with the appropriate knowledge and safety/communications equipment on each trip. The company has an outstanding safety record and employs trained New Zealand and local guides wherever possible to ensure guests truly experience the essence of this country. Important Footnote: The accommodation is in Department of Conservation huts which are pre-booked for our guests - these are basic but comfortable and must be shared with other track walkers. Clients must carry their own pack containing clothing, sleeping bag and a snack pack and eating utensils are issued for the tour. Guides carry all food and cooking utensils.
